Human beings have been composting for thousands of years and reference is made to it in cultures throughout the world.

The English farmer & poet Thomas Tusser wrote of composting:

“If a garden require it, now trench it ye may, 
one trench not a yard, from another go lay;
Which being well filled with muck by and by,
to cover with mould, for a season to lie.”

Although compost was all but abandoned by commercial agriculture in the 20th century due to the rise of synthetic fertilisers, the scientific knowledge we now have has helped us fully understand compost and realise its unparalleled benefits.
